Despite having a loving fiancé, Kate Edwards is haunted by a feeling that something is missing in her life.
After losing her job as a reporter, a sense of inspiration is ignited by an invitation to spend the weekend with Emma Daines, a retired professor of social anthropology and the former US ambassador to Germany. Kate has long admired Emma’s accomplishments and for years has attempted to obtain an interview. Yet Emma Daines is known to be deeply suspicious of journalists, as she holds a secret that reporters have wanted to get their hands on for decades.
A thoroughly mesmerizing novel, The Invitation takes us to a beach community in Northern California, where through a series of outdoor adventures Kate struggles with her internal conflicts over love, ambition, and her need to gain Emma’s trust. Little does she know how her life will change when she stumbles upon Emma’s hidden memoir which exposes the underbelly of her determination, her relationships, and brings to light the walls that keep us separated from one another.
This riveting, insightful, and unpredictable story brings us into the heart of two women who ultimately learn from each other what’s important in life and the real and powerful meaning behind receiving The Invitation.
Journey of personal awakening unfolds in new novel, The Invitation

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. — Author Dawn Kohler has spent over a decade coaching top executives in the Entertainment, Technology and Fashion Industry. She now taps that experience in her debut novel, “The Invitation: A Weekend with Emma” (published by Balboa Press).
In this first of a planned series, Kohler shows the vulnerabilities of a highly acclaimed woman as she finds her authentic self through a series of setbacks. “I wanted to show a story about a woman that is not defined by the tragedies in her life,” Kohler says, “but instead has learned how to use this time of global change to gain strength, wisdom, and to be truly productive and fulfilled in the world as a result of these experiences.”
The book is written from the point of view of Kate Edwards, an ambitious reporter. When Kate loses her job, she receives an invitation to spend a weekend with the reclusive Emma Daines, a retired social anthropologist and former U.S. ambassador to Germany. Kate jumps at the chance to meet her idol and sets out for Northern California in hopes to acquire Emma’s secret untold story, and answer her own questions about love, longing and how to pursue a meaningful life.
“It’s an intimate read,” Kohler says, “with several unpredictable twists. Like so many of us, the characters struggle with feelings of unworthiness, longing and rejection. These feelings often drive our choices and can veer us from the more authentic paths in our personal and professional lives. ”
Kohler aims to convey a message about personal responsiblity as a means for global progression. In conjunction to the book series, she has established the Emma Daines Society, a community to support others through transformational changes and to inspire conscious and purposeful living.
