How important are names to you in your books? Do you choose the names based on
liking the way it sounds or the meaning?
Polarity got her name from her ever-unraveling, borderline-personality-disorder mother:
“Mom knows that BPD can cause her to see people as perfect or evil. She named me
Polarity, spanning positive and negative, to remind her that I’m not one or the
other….She wanted to be sure that she never judged me the way borderlines tend to
Ethan is a strong, honest name—pure, old, and simple. It’s a name I love, and it totally
fits the character.
The other names were chosen just because of their sound. Originally, Shanique was
named Claudia, but one of the editors, Alyssa Hall or Misti Wolanski, pointed out that
Claudia might be confused with the name of another character, Cynthia. So I came up
with Shanique to replace Claudia and immediately liked it so much better. Shanique is
an elegant, talented character. She became more real to me when I found the right
name for her. And last of all, here’s a family secret: I plugged in the first names of my own children
(Molly, Lacy, and Jed) for some minor characters! So far, they’ve made no comment
about this—not sure how they like it!
What was the last movie, TV show or book that made you cry or tear up?
I sniffled through the last twenty minutes of About Time. I watched it accidentally—not
really knowing anything about the premise, and honestly, if I had read a synopsis, I
probably wouldn’t have watched it. But it was such a sweet, feel-good movie! It
beautifully drove home the value of everyday moments and how much we miss by
worrying about the future or the past.
What are your thoughts on sequels? and do you have one in the works?
I’m working on Polarity in Love! It has a stronger focus on Ethan, and he and Polarity
take greater risks. Their relationship becomes more complex.
